HELP! I want to Walk away from Facebook!

Yes, I said it.  I don't think I can, but gosh darn it I really really want to.

Here are my reasons to kick the habit:

1) The recent idea they want to listen into the microphone on my phone to see what I am doing while I am using their services is down right disgusting, and more than the big brother of anyone should do.  (I don't need anyone to know how often I listen to Barbra Streisand, watch a cheers episode, or frankly this diet gives me a little more flatulence than normal.).

2) They also are in beta to determine who around me is closest to me (geographically :) at any moment.  Sorry, I don't think that is interesting to me.  I turned off the Apple Find Friends, cause I don't want to be found that often and frankly I don't need or want to have to turn that off.  If you are visiting near me and want to see me this is easy call, text, email or even a billboard well placed will suffice.  If you are near me and want to not see me, you are going to be safe here cause I plan to not turn this on.

3) I already know I am boring.  That is OK, and I accept it, but apparently I am more boring than I realized.  Outside of a sunrise here and there, a great article on Bette Midler, or a blog post I really don't think my life is all that interesting to others.  I am not saying it isn't interesting to me, just that I don't think most of what is in my mind deserves a public outing any more than what TV shows I watch on Netflix does.  Honestly, most of what is in my head is nobody's business but my own.

4) Random acts of facts.  This ever ending need to post as "fact" things that are found on the web, regardless of their source or any research of their accuracy.  I won't go into too much detail, but no the CEO of Starbucks does not hate Israel on the contrary.  And, there are some good reasons for GMO food such as drought resistant crops in this age of increasing human population along with global warming.  If you have been Vegan all of your life how do you know that Tofu dish taste like chicken any way!

5) Random acts of Politics.  We all have opinions, and assumptions of where our given country and the world is going.  Amazing, we don't all agree to where that it is going.  Just cause of lack of agreement does not entitle one to accuse the opposition of being stupid, idiots, or just back ass backwards.

6) Personally offensive videos of cute activities that really reflect poor human choices.  Such as the cat saving the kid from a dog while the human takes the video with a camera.  Either this is well staged, or the human should be in jail for not stepping in to protect the kid instead of waiting for the cute cat to do it.

7) Awareness of human illness and frailty.  This isn't nice, but you know I love you, and if you need me I am here.  But... outside of my increased flatulence with this diet I don't think you need to know when I am under the weather.

8) Stupid Polls:  If the poll says what you want to hear, that doesn't mean it is accurate.  Frankly, if it says what you don't want to hear that doesn't mean it is idiotic.  No offense, without much scientific and psychological research and backing, the odds are they are just lucky or all results are what people want to hear.

9) Games:  Yes I know many of you enjoy them, and I am not taking any of that away.  But, please don't invite me to play along and frankly it irritates me that when you agree to play they have access to my contact information to invite me to play along with you.  That is the top reason I refuse to play as I don't want to do that to others.

10) Advertisements:  Let's see, because I googled dementia, doesn't mean I or anyone around me has it so no ads required.  Just because you see that I am gay from my browsing history does not mean I am looking for a "date", need Viagra, or need access to Christian Dating Services (really!).  I am not sure the correlation engine at Facebook but it needs help for these ads to be someone what interesting, and frankly less offensive.

11) Opt Out:  Shouldn't I have to opt in for all of the offensive snooping of Facebook?

OK.. here is the reverse.. why I have not given up on Facebook:

1) I do leverage the contacts and interest for business purposes.   You can type longer messages than twitter, and it is a broader audience than LinkedIn  (which every day looks more and more like Facebook, really let us access your contact list and calendar so your meetings can be more meaningful.. really!).

2) There are people I stay connected to over Facebook that I would not connect with otherwise including friends from the past.  Many of them especially from college, IBM, and Kentucky I would miss.  So, if any of you have suggestions for how to stay connected let me know.

3) My blog, I have had over 10,000 hits on my blog (in about 5 years... :) ) and I assume that number would go down significantly if I didn't post a link every new post including this one.

4) Occasional News post from others that I have not seen and find interesting.

5) Travel pictures and information: I love people who post pictures of new places, puppies, and key family moments.  Seriously, this makes me smile.  Sometimes they are places I have been, so good memories, and sometimes they are places I wish I could go to the moment of your pics.  However, those of you posting about the superiority of cats over dogs should be forewarned... the spirit of Snoopy is not happy!

6) Restaurants:  Now I have mixed feelings about this one.  I love reviews, and frankly good and bad ones, and so yes they are good.  I don't always want to see a picture of your plate unless that fruit is carved to be mickey mouse or something.  I do generally find postings of food cooked at home interesting, as well so keep those coming.

7) Messaging App:  I think their messaging app is about as reliable as texting and easier to use.  But, since I assume this is where the microphone is going to be turned on this isn't much value to me much longer.

So, how am I balancing this scale.  I am sticking around for now.  I would welcome feedback or input on the above.  Also, I am trying to check less frequently.  So, if you really need me text or even the messaging app on facebook will waken my phone and that is probably the best way to reach me when in need to reach me.
